Introduction

The Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs Appeal Tribunal (Tribunal) is an independent, quasi-judicial appeal body set up to hear appeals concerning matters in the agriculture and food industry. All Tribunal members are also appointed to the Board of Negotiation (BON) under the Environmental Protection Act.

Members of the Tribunal/BON are appointed by the Lieutenant Governor in Council. They represent varied geographical areas in Ontario and have diverse backgrounds and expertise in areas relating to agriculture including production, processing, marketing, labour, farm implements, an/or drainage matters. The Tribunal usually sits in panels of three.

The Statutory Powers Procedure Act governs the practices and procedures of the Tribunal. The Tribunal also has written rules of procedure accessible by clicking on this link.

The Tribunal is supported by staff of the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs assigned to the Tribunal.  The Tribunal operates independently of the Ministry.
